Everything you need to know about charging your e-Golf

Electric vehicle (EV) technology remains relatively new. Unless you have an EV, you may not know all the details surrounding how it works. And that can be a little intimidating.

For instance, how do you charge an e-Golf? Can you plug it in like you do your lawn mower or hedge trimmer? Do you have to buy a charging station? How long does it take to charge an e-Golf?

Fret not, here’s everything you need to know about charging your e-Golf.

About the e-Golf battery

Let’s begin with the e-Golf’s lithium-ion battery capacity. A full charge will use approximately 31.5 kWh of electricity. Keep in mind, the battery will never fully deplete, so you’ll never actually have to use that much electricity to get a full charge.

In terms of consumption, the battery uses approximately 17.4 kWh for every 100 kilometers driven. This is the gasoline equivalent of only 2.0 L/100 km! So if you drive 100 km per day, on average, you’ll have to charge the battery approximately every 1.8 days.

Charging your e-Golf

So, can you plug your e-Golf into a regular residential outlet just like you do everything else? Yes. Yes, you can. Better yet, every e-Golf comes with a home charger for a regular outlet.

But here’s the catch: outlets come in varying voltages. The outlets in typical residential homes are either 110 or 120 volts. Think of voltage like water pressure. At this voltage, you’re not getting a lot of water coming out the spout. It would take between 26 and 29 hours to fully charge the e-Golf on Level 1.

At Level 2, voltage moves up to between 208 and 240 volts. You can install a Level 2 charger at home on a dryer or oven-style outlet. Because there is more voltage—and typically more amperes—charging an electric vehicle on Level 2 would reduce to 4-5 hours. You can also find these at many convenient destinations—grocery stores, schools, offices—for a quick top-up.

A Level 3 charger is a fast-charging station. Unlike Level 1 and 2, Level 3 operates at over 400 volts and the high-voltage battery’s native Direct Current (DC). More and more are being installed throughout your community and along key transportation routes, especially in Ontario, Québec, and British Columbia. Charging time to 80% is only 30-45 minutes, the perfect amount of time for a road trip pit stop. The last 20% of any EV’s battery takes longer to charge—roughly the equivalent of Level 2—due to the lithium-ion battery’s inherent nature.
