Fastest Growing SUV Brand in Canada in 2017

VW was the Fastest Growing SUV Brand in Canada* in 2017.

Volkswagen has a long-standing history of building great small cars that offer exceptional value and quality. North Americans quickly fell in love with the Beetle when it made its way across the pond and that love has only grown to include models like the Jetta and the Golf.

These models have long been the darlings of the Volkswagen lineup thanks to German engineering that has prioritized performance and handling, putting the driver at the centre of the experience.

Over the years, Canadian families have grown and evolved. And it was time that we did too. In 2015, Volkswagen AG committed to expanding its North American lineup to include SUVs and crossovers that better meet the needs of our unique market.

Last year, we launched the next-generation, All-New 2018 Tiguan, equipped with a longer wheelbase that allows for an optional 3rd row of seating and the All-New 7 seat 2018 Atlas, a midsize SUV that feels full-size. And Canadians have been quick to embrace both models. So much so that Volkswagen was the “Fastest Growing SUV Brand in Canada* in 2017.”

We’re working hard to give Canadians more of what they want: capacity, comfort,  all-wheel drive performance, enhanced safety features and the technologies they’ve come to expect. Of course, that’s all within Volkswagen’s trademark quality.

This is just the beginning. Last year, Volkswagen brand chief, Herbert Diess, announced that the company expects SUVs  to account for 40% of sales globally. . While there’s no news yet on when the new model will go into production, or what kind of SUV it will be, it’s pretty safe to say, there’s a lot more to come when it comes to SUVs.

Stay tuned.

Behind the scenes with The All-New Jetta and the Elwins

Canadian Indie Pop Band brings the beat to All-New Jetta TV spot

Technology has come a long way. And along with it, the sound systems in our cars. No more cassettes or compact discs. You can play your favourite music right from smartphone or directly from your Spotify account using the app on your Volkswagen’s infotainment system. And just when you thought your road trips couldn’t get any better, they have. Thanks to BeatsAudio®, available on the All-New, 2019 Volkswagen Jetta Highline. BeatsAudio®, formerly known as BeatsByDre, considers your car your studio and immerses you in the music the way artists intended. The technology is inspired by the unique blend of art and science brought about by a partnership between artist Dr. Dre and record producer Jimmy Iovine. If you’ve never experienced the superior sound quality of a Beats sound system, you may just want to book a test drive when the All-New Jetta hits dealerships.

In celebration of Jetta’s exciting new partnership with BeatsAudio®, we enlisted Canadian indie pop band, The Elwins to record the soundtrack for our newest 2019 Jetta commercial. If you haven’t seen the spot, check it out below.

For the commercial, The Elwins performed a cover of Eddie Murphy’s 1980’s hit, Party All the Time. It’s the perfect fit for a group of mischievous senior gentlemen out for a late-night joyride. If you’re not familiar with The Elwins, this Keswick Ontario band has been touring since 2012 and have garnered much buzz from publications like Rolling Stone, Exclaim! and the CBC. We’ve got some behind-the-scenes footage of the band talking about their involvement in the All-New 2019 Jetta TV spot. Just press play on the video below to watch.

Like what you see so far?  There’s a whole lot more to uncover in the 2019 Jetta. This newly-redesigned sedan not only looks different, it is different. Jetta fans will love the value that comes with more features than ever before. Soak up the sunshine through the available panoramic Rail 2 Rail sunroof, listen to your favourite tunes via the BeatsAudio® system and when the ride heats up, available vented cooling seats keep things chill. And that’s just the beginning. See more great features and sign up to receive the latest updates about the 2019 Jetta.

Volkswagen 4MOTION AWD tackles snow and ice

Drivers put all-wheel drive to the test on the frozen waters of Lac Sacacomie.

Standing on 80 centimeters of hard packed ice, Canadian automotive journalists prepared to put our 4MOTION® All-Wheel Drive system to the test.

On a beautiful day in February, we invited a crew of driving enthusiasts to Lac Sacacomie in Quebec. The reason: A day of carving on Quebec’s snow covered roads as well as on a closed slalom course right on the lake’s icy surface.

On hand for testing was our family of 4MOTION® All-Wheel vehicles, including the Atlas, Tiguan, Golf Alltrack, Golf SportWagen and the Golf R.  Each model, apart from Golf R and Alltrack where 4MOTION® comes standard, gives drivers the option to upgrade to 4MOTION® All-Wheel Drive on base models. That means that Canadians looking for an affordable all-wheel drive option, don’t have to shell out as much cash to feel more confident behind the wheel.

If you’re not completely up to speed on 4MOTION®, this on-demand all-wheel drive system is powered by a Haldex multi-plate clutch designed to shift power from the wheels that slip to those that grip. That could mean shifting torque to the rear wheels or even side to side. Contrary to always-on all-wheel drive systems, 4MOTION® acts only when you need it, helping to reduce overall fuel consumption. All it takes is a fraction of a second for 4MOTION® to kick in. And the best part is, the switch is seamless, you don’t even feel it.

With a closed course before them, our testers could safely put 4MOTION® and its various drive modes through their paces. And that they did. You can read all about the experience at the sites listed below. And be sure to watch the video.

Atlas, SportWagen/Alltrack and Golf R get recognized.

The popular car review website Auto123.com named its top vehicles of the year– and the 2018 Atlas was among the winners.

According to an article published on the website, a special ceremony took place in Toronto at the end of the November to honour each of the winners – and the runners up across 17 categories.

The winners were chosen by 6 of the website’s veteran writers and testers, including the its chief writer. Among those in the running for 2018 Midsize SUV/Minivan of the Year, were Atlas, Honda Odyssey and Chevrolet Traverse.

In an earlier review of the Atlas, titled 10 Ways the Volkswagen Atlas Will Please your Family, the tester was impressed with features relating to performance and comfort. German-engineered for optimal handling and agility is at the top of the list of reasons you might want to consider the 2018 Atlas. The review also praises Atlas’ ability to tow recreational vehicles up to 5,000 lbs, and the available 4MOTION® All-Wheel drive, which provides added confidence in all weather conditions.
