Volkswagen wins fourth consecutive WRC

The 2016 World Rally Championship (WRC) recently wrapped up in Australia. After a year of racing through some of the toughest conditions on the planet, Volkswagen has laid claim to several victories.

Car Number 9, driven by Andreas Mikkelsen and Anders Jaegar won the Australian leg of the race while Sebastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia received the overall championship titles for driver and co-driver. And to top it off, Volkswagen took home the championship title for best overall manufacturer.

The WRC comprises thirteen 3-day events that take drivers over surfaces ranging from gravel and tarmac to snow and ice. Each rally is split into stages where drivers compete against the clock on closed roads. Points awarded at the thirteen rallies are accumulated over the course of the series to determine the overall championship winners in the categories of driver, co-driver and auto manufacturer.

Volkswagen has been participating in the WRC since 2013 with driver Sebastien Ogier at the wheel of our Volkswagen Polo R. We’re proud to say that for four consecutive years, Sebastien and Volkswagen have won best overall driver and best overall manufacturer, respectively.

This year, we’ve made the difficult decision to make this our last WRC. And what better way to go out? With four consecutive championships! We couldn’t be more proud of Sebastien and of our engineers, whose commitment to continual improvement is nothing short of exceptional.
